Celebrating Dior Saddle Bag’s one year anniversary.
July 19th 2019 marked the annual completion of the Dior saddle bag that was re-introduced as a core shape by Maria Grazia Chiuri last year, 18 years after its initial launch by John Galliano in 2000. On the anniversary of this iconic bag, let us revisit its intriguing history.
First introduced to by former creative director John Galliano for the spring/summer 2000 collection, it quickly rose to prominence by being seen on the arm of IT girls. Carrie Bradshaw, Sarah Jessica Parker‘s fashion worshipping character from Sex and The City immortalised the bag in pop culture history, after which the saddle bag made its way to celebrity wrists from Paris Hilton’s to Beyoncé’s. It marked the birth of the new IT bag – a micro horse saddle-shaped sack, which closed with a flashy gold D-shaped stirrup, that went over your shoulder and sat snug under your arm. The first iterations came in blue denim, camel leather, scarf print, and the brand’s seminal logo finished with a gold Dior ‘D’ buckle that cemented its status.
2018 saw the power bag being sported a lot. Dior bringing back this retro style perhaps says a lot about the power of the influencer, with a number of fashion bloggers and models heralding its return. It returned to Dior boutiques worldwide in two sizes and a variety of colours in July as part of the Dior Fall collection 2018. It was easily handheld, worn as a crossbody, or strapped around the waist.
About the saddles return, Maria Grazia said “I thought this collection would be an opportunity to revive its timeless beauty. I consider this icon, of the house’s recent history, the perfect accessory to deal with this battle that is daily life. Indeed, the Saddle bag is worn in exactly the same way as a shirt or jacket, and it’s so comfortable to wear with its long strap that you almost forget it’s there. The Saddle bag is also practical because it allows you to carry everything you need with you. It’s for this reason that I wanted it larger and more robust, but also very colourful, embroidered or with beaded fringe because, like a chameleon, it adapts to all situations.”
This year saw the addition of newer sizes, colours, patterns and embroidery versions. Sold separately, the embroidered wide canvas straps add a stylish touch and allow the bag to be carried in different ways.
